Well, Taiwan is democratic and prosperous. Can you not at least sympathize with its apprehension about being annexed?

Anyway, I would prefer not to turn China into an enemy. My point is that there are sources of conflict that may lead in that direction, and although it is preferable to maintain diplomatic relations and robust trade, one has to prepare for contingencies. Most people laughed when Billy Mitchell, in arguing for a separate Air Force, predicted that Japan would be one of our next adversaries, and strategic planning had to prepare for a Pacific War. That was, if memory serves, in 1924. Less than 20 years later, he was proved right. It is always the job of the military to prepare for the next possible adversary.......
