Not really. In fact, this is a common fallacy: the idea that a loss isn't a loss until you monetize it. But the value of your account still decreases just as much if the stock goes down, even if you don't sell. You are holding a share certificate worth $10, instead of holding $10; what's the difference? How is having the paper you hold drop in value from $150 to $10 not a "bullet" ? If I sold at $20, while you held on as the stock went to $10, do you really want to tell me that you are not worse off than I?
