U have the internet/airline analogy mixed up. U compare the airlines with the telcos and the plane makers with Sun. Truth is, the airlines suffer cos of competition and relatively low barriers to entry. Anyone can set up an airline. Manufacturing a plane is more difficult.

Like the airlines, hardware manufacturers are 2 a penny, it is easy for even unskilled people to buy the componenets and throw a system together, even a sun system.

The hardware manufacturers go the same was as any other commodity producer, as u have seen with dell/compaq etc. The big question is can Sun differentiate? Of course thay can to some extent, but can they differentiate enough to maintain growth?

At the end of the day, any business with a sun server can run without it by buying alternatives from a different supplier. So it all comes down to customer perceptions of price, performance, reliability, compatibility etc. these things are available from tens of vendors in the marketplace.
