March 16, 2001--Large Scale Biology Corporation (LSBC) was identified yesterday as the partner in a joint US Navy/National Institutes of Health research project that focuses on non-embryonic human stem cell research.
In a letter sent to President Bush and signed by more than twenty Senators and members of Congress, the following statement was made: ``The Navy/NIH group has partnered with a biotech company, Large Scale Biology Corporation, to identify the genes and proteins which induce the self-renewal of adult human stem cells. Once the gene is identified, Large Scale Biology Corporation will produce this stem cell growth factor in mass scale using its patented tobacco plant-based technology.''
LSBC Chairman and CEO Robert L. Erwin today made the following comment: ``The Company's scientific and technology team is honored to be chosen to support the Navy and NIH in this important work which may result in discoveries with momentous clinical implications when the novel stem cell growth factors are identified. As we are just beginning to address the work of this mission, it would be imprudent to speculate about specific expectations or a timeframe for success. However, we believe our proprietary technology platform provides the capabilities for identifying and producing the stem cell growth factor.''
