Push technology pioneer PointCast Inc has pulled back from its trailblazing past with the forthcoming version of the PointCast Network, focusing on needed improvements and performance gains rather than on major new features, PC Week reported June 2. ----------- COMPUTERWORLD - External users increasingly are trying to get the keys to companies' data warehouses and companies are starting to comply with their customers' requests. But this raises issues on how to give external users access to the historical information via the World Wide Web without threatening the security of extranets, ComputerWorld reported in the June 2 issue. ---------- COMPUTER RESELLER NEWS - Too much heat and too little space sum up current problems with the next generation of Intel Corp's Pentium II processors for notebooks, and the heat problem is expected to be so severe it could delay the early first quarter 1998 introduction of the chip, code-named Deschutes, Computer Reseller News reported June 2. IBM is jumping with both feet into Java, putting the industry giant on an eventual collision course with its key allies Sun Microsystems and Netscape Communications, as it seeks to become the top Java vendor, CRN reported June 2. ---------- INFOWORLD - Both IBM and Microsoft plan to release message-queuing software this summer,intensifying competition in the middleware niche, InfoWorld reported June 2. Corporate PC buyers increasingly are turning to direct sellers like Gateway 2000 Inc and Dell Computer Corp for their computer needs, putting pressure on more traditional manufacturers like Compaq Computer Corp , InfoWorld reported. ----------- INFORMATION WEEK - Oracle Corp will roll out its much-anticipated Oracle8 database management system June 24 amid questions about whether it can live up to high expectations, Information Week reported June 2. Microsoft's Windows NT 5.0 may have slipped further and might not be released until the second half of 1998, analysts and developers are warning, according to Information Week. Microsoft said it is on track to ship the beta (test) version in calendar 1997. ----------- EE TIMES - A group of chip vendors and consumer-electronics companies will hold a private meeting in Germany this week to develop a possible scheme for the first deployment of satellite-based digital-audio-broadcast (DAB) services. Digital radio transmissions around the world could start as soon as the end of 1998, EE TIMES reported June 2. ----------- ELECTRONIC BUYERS' NEWS - Cyrix Corp is counting on its 6x86MX of M2 processor to pull it out of a bad slump. The M2 is expected to ship this week, Electonic Buyers News reported in its June 2 issue. Cyrix, which has seen sales fall over 25 percent in the last three years, said it plans to target the midrange computer market with its top-line processor and the low-end market with its integrated MediaGX processor, EBN reported June 2. ----------- MACWEEK - Apple Computer Inc and Macintosh clone developers have made considerable progress in negotiations over future licensing terms, but the parties remain far apart over central issues and some licensees said their patience is wearing thin, MacWeek reported June 2.
