Judge Restricts Scope Of Terms In Rambus Patent Case By MICHAEL BUETTNER Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES RICHMOND, Va. -- The federal judge presiding over a patent infringement lawsuit filed here by Rambus Inc. (RMBS) has issued a memorandum limiting the definitions of several key terms in the dispute, generally agreeing with the arguments of defendant Infineon Technologies AG (IFX). In a memorandum of opinion signed Thursday but only made available Friday morning, Judge Robert E. Payne explained the legal constructions he will allow in the trial, which is scheduled to begin Tuesday. Among the key terms in the dispute, Payne wrote that he will consider that "the term 'bus' means a multiplexed set of signal lines used to transmit address, data and control information." Rambus had sought a broader interpretation construing "bus" to mean any lines or wires connecting memory devices. Payne's memo also tended to support Infineon's views on other technical terms involved in Rambus' dynamic random access memory, or DRAM, patents, including "block size," "read request" and "integrated circuit device."
