MSDW- Qualcomm (QCOM-$52-SB) Sprint PCS Deploying 3G Technology Louis Gerhardy

Sprint PCS announced plans to introduce 3G technology (based on QCOM's cdma2000 1x technology) to the N. American market in C2001. Full details will be disclosed at the CTIA Wireless 2001 conference on 3/20. Given the delays with WCDMA and GPRS technology, we believe investors who may have been anticipating similar delays in cdma2000 1x technology should now feel more confident about the reality of QCOM's cdma2000 1x technology.

We agree with Sprint PCS's, view that their introduction of 3G services has been facilitated by the ease of the CDMA migration path to 3G, not to mention the lower expense relative to other technology choices. We believe wireless service providers deploying cdma2000 1x and cdma2000 1xEV technology will enjoy a time to market advantage over providers who have selected WCDMA technology. Although QCOM addresses both forms of 3G technology, cdma2000 and WCDMA, we believe QCOM's semi market share in cdma2000 is likely to be higher than QCOM's share of the WCDMA market.

Sprint PCS has labeled their new 3G network "3G1x" and they state that the cdma2000 1x network will provide three major benefits: 1) double the voice capacity in the same amount of radio spectrum, driving significant savings (no need to acquire new spectrum); 2) a tenfold increase in data speeds (from 14.4kpbs to 144kpbs); and 3) cdma2000 1x based handsets should extend handset battery performance life in standby mode by approximately 50%.
