NEW YORK (Reuters) - The amount investors borrowed from New York Stock Exchange member firms to buy stocks rose 7.3 percent in February to $211.4 billion, the Big Board said.

Margin debt last month stood at $197.1 billion, after declining for a second straight month, the Big Board said.

Margin debt hit a record level -- $278.5 billion -- in March of last year, when technology and Internet stocks peaked. The Nasdaq Composite Index has since fallen by more than 60 percent.

The NYSE releases margin debt figures each month.
