Alcatel snares largest single DSL order to date

MANHASSET, N.Y. — Alcatel Microelectronics (Paris) said today (March 15) that it has snared an order for 1.26 million asymmetric DSL (ADSL) lines from Taiwan's Chungwa Telecom. Alcatel called the deal its largest single ADSL order ever from one telecom operator and its first to cover both customer-premises and central-office equipment. Christian Olivier, vice president of worldwide sales for Alcatel, said the order is significant for both its magnitude and Asian market penetration. "The order shows a strong demand for ADSL from emerging markets and represents AME's first major move into Asia."
At the moment, Alcatel commands 53 percent of the global DSL market and through 2000 had shipped 7.7 million xDSL lines to operators worldwide. "The announcement should significantly increase our market share," said Olivier.
The Chungwa order calls for 600,000 lines by the end of this year. "It's a very aggressive rollout schedule," said Olivier, "as they're trying to be as fast as the Korean market."
Though the total order is for 1.26 million, Alcatel itself will not be supplying all the chips. Still, Olivier said, "We'll have a very large share of the order."

I find it interesting that GSPN claims to be "the number one provider of DSL chip sets". There are different flavors of DSL, maybe they dominate one fraction of this. Without looking further, I'll leave it as it stands.
