Your point about intel pc's is spot on. Sun is less exposed as they do (did?) specialise in the higher end stuff but they are still exposed. Sun is the only company throwing sun boxes together as far as i know but that is down to proprietary architecture rather than level of difficulty. If you look inside a sun box you will see a number of mass produced pluggable modules, very similar to their pc brothers. The proprietary architecture protects sun from cloners, but restricts the customers' choice of software, servicing, upgrades etc - and asts to the cost. Sun has to make sure they have enuff in the plus column to outweigh those disadvantages. It is an uphill struggle.
