China Unicom to hold CDMA bidding March 26

China Unicom, China's second largest mobile telecom operator, will hold a bidding for
CDMA (code division multiple access) mode wireless system and equipment suppliers
March 26, officials here said yesterday.

The state-run Chinese telecom company plans to lay 5,000 CDMA lines in 200 cities in
14 provinces by 2003, starting with the launch of the service of 1,300 lines in 14 cities
including Beijing and Shanghai this October.

For the bidding, the (Korean) Ministry of Information and Communication will soon
distribute papers for bidding proposals to domestic and foreign CDMA equipment
manufacturers including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.

The first bidding for the Chinese CDMA project is expected to reach $1.56 billion in
value and it's estimated that $2.4 billion worth of handsets will be supplied to China.
