Unfortunately price/performance wise Sun can't stack up against Intel P4/P3'S for the workstation/low-mid range server iron market. Linux and and the ever increasing PC power is eroding the traditional UNIX workstation market and low-mid end server market. If you don't believe me just look at SGI who's business was based on proprietary UNIX workstations.

Sun's bread and butter is big iron, which they are the best at. These big heaters are reliable, performing and have reasonable uptimes. They are ideal targets for migration of legacy applications and fit in well to current application development architectures (2 and 3 tier).

Long term however I see a trend toward FAT client (aka P2P lately) due to increasing bandwidth and decreasing cost/performance in the PC arena.
