Nadine, I did not put words in your mouth. I just told DMA what your message sounded like to me (posted below for your reference). It really does read (to me) like you feel the wealthy are not pulling their weight. What exactly is your position on SS and the top Fed Income tax bracket? I know you are against any privatization of SS. In a short answer give me the percentage for fed income you feel is reasonable and tell me how SS should be changed to get this "burden" off the low income worker. As far as SS goes I get kind of ticked that I have to put so much into a system that performs so poorly compared to what I could do with the money myself. Since I am self employed I have to double what your average joe puts in. Not to say that I would scrap it, but I get a bit sensitive to people implying that I'm not pulling my weight here.

from Nadine:
"The tax picture looks very different if you look at income taxes alone vs. looking at income taxes and payroll taxes. Payroll taxes are regressive and are now the largest tax burden for many low-income workers. If you look at income taxes and payroll taxes together, the percentage of tax paid by the richest Americans is not growing."
