Please explain to me how backroom politics helps the country in general.

I'm sure you have occasion in the course of your work to participate in meetings. How often does work get done at those meetings? How often do decisions get made at those meetings? Sometimes, I guess. But generally, work doesn't get done at meetings and decisions aren't made at meetings. Meetings are for communicating.

If you were to get some idea that would require four different divisions of your corporation to implement, there would probably be a formal meeting of the principals of those four divisions. But there would be a whole bunch of other discussions between various staff members of this division and that one and perhaps between this principal and that principal. You couldn't even get the meeting set up without having meetings about who should be at the meeting and what the agenda should be. Maybe principal A would need to talk to principal C to grease the skids a little. Maybe staffers B and D would need to work out some language that both their bosses would find acceptable. Imagine doing all that stuff in public. Imagine that principle B is a little slow when it comes to technology and doesn't understand what is being proposed so he says "no" to your idea because he doesn't want to ask questions and look stupid in the public meeting? There goes your idea. Is that a good outcome?

Stuff gets done outside of formal meetings. That stuff can be good stuff or bad stuff. I know you want to avoid the bad stuff, but public meetings obviate the good stuff, too.
