Are there cars that have the option of a driver lap belt?
I've got to say, if we are saving a majority of folks from head injuries- I am willing to sacrifice you. It's cheaper and it makes utilitarian sense. How many people would it be ok to sacrifice for you not to wear your seat belt? If seat belt laws were not mandatory we could probably project how many people would die as a result- how many would be too many for us to make that adjustment in your favor? I am not being mean (i know, how unusual)- I am curious. Not trying to push any buttons.

In our state (CA) a tough new law has gone into effect for older children. see:
mylifepath.com
It is now in effect.

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study showed that 71 percent of deaths and 66 percent of injuries in
accidents involving children under 15 could be eliminated if the children used an appropriate child safety seat, booster seat or
seat belt on every ride.

I had my car seat WAY before the law went into effect because I know all about traumatic car accident injuries and how to weigh the relative risks. I know my daughter is as protected as she can be. Am I glad the state is stepping in to make sure other children, whose parents are not quite as informed about the risks, are protected? You bet. Because number one it's CHEAP. Much cheaper than putting back together the kids that get smashed up. And secondly, it reduces misery in the world. I can get behind that. Will some children die because of their carseats? I've no doubt they will. Just as some children die because of their immunization shots. But the greater good is definitely on the regulatory side here (imo). If you've got a different risk calculus I'd love to hear it. But all the data I see is that seat belt laws are positive. And car seat laws are positive. And Bike helmet and Motorcycle helmet laws are positive.
