Shaw, I thought someone might ask - from my last post:

Banks have used unrealized profits on their vast stock holdings to offset bad loan write-offs. Now, with banks required to value the holdings at market price for the first time from April, analysts say some banks are close to reporting losses.

That's straining their ability to lend, starving the economy of the fresh money it needs to grow. Japan's main gauge of money supply rose 2.7 percent in February from a year ago, less than half the pace of money supply growth in the U.S.

Note when they say losses they cannot at this time quantify same. Fitch rating agency just put 19 of these banks on credit downgrade watch. I've long heard of Nikkei at 14K being a key level for the banks' holdings. With bad loans compounding these deteriorating stock holdings, the combination being quantified will show us what's hidden under that rock; we may not like what we see...

Rob

late edit:
Who cares about Japan? We need to save Japan to save ourselves!
Re: selloff on 50bps - the market hasn't rallied so it might just be a non-event; now 0 or 25bps is different (MASSIVE SELL-OFF, imo)
