Maurice, it's comforting to find someone who thinks positively over the long term, but the short term threats to the market as a whole and to QUALCOMM in particular are almost overwhelming.

An article in the Saturday New York Times reports that the Bush administration is preparing a plan to provide military hardware and assistance, including anti-missile defenses to Taiwan. The article noted that China was extremely disturbed by this latest change in policy, where for the first time Taiwan might have access to some very new weapons. We all know what happened when China thought the U.S. was getting too cozy to the independence party candidate in Taiwan, and when China wasn't sure about U.S. support for its entry into the World Trade Organization. Those events led China to turn down the previous agreement with QUALCOMM to move to CDMA and led QCOM shares down the current path, which still hasn't been reversed despite the latest agreements with China.

You may be too distant to realize that we have an extremely myopic group of policy makers concerned more over outdated principles than practical diplomacy. One might suppose it couldn't get much worse, but don't be surprised if it does, and in the process the whole stock market goes down even more.
