I don't think that Japan's troubles alone would cause the US economy to 'tank'. Not that there won't be collateral damage done to our economy if Japan drops substantially farther from here. I still believe that our economy is resilient enough to sustain many body blows and still be able to make it through the round, to use a boxing analogy. This doesn't mean that we will survive unscathed but I doubt we will be down for the count due to Japan's inability to correct their financial system's woes. Can these issues cause our current downturn to be extended or exacerbated? Of course. Will they cause the USS economy to 'tank'? I don't believe they will.
