Lipko, see the comments from this week's Economist and its suggestions as to U.S. policy towards China. This is a two-way street, and it isn't clear that the U.S. is interested in anything more than implementing its anti-missile defense strategy, no matter how much this annoys countries like China.

We had a former president from Texas (Lyndon Johnson), who was advised to negotiate a settlement with the North Vietnamese shortly after taking over from Kennedy. Johnson remarked (very reliable source), "This isn't the way we do it in Texas." I hope a similar attitude does not govern future relations with China.
