I agree that anti- Judaism is found in historical Christianity, and that it can be sourced all the way back to the New Testament. It was never my purpose to argue otherwise. As one of the few people around here who has been both Jewish and Christian, I am in a peculiar position to feel the tension surrounding the matter. What I do want to say is that Nazi anti- Semitism was very much worse, and that even those who were somewhat anti- Semitic, as, presumably, a lot of US soldiers were, would be horrified at the level of persecution engaged in by the Nazis. I also have not denied that traditional anti- Semitism or anti- Judaism fed into the Nazi brutality, only that it was not of itself a sufficient cause. Finally, I quote the Luther material because there is a strong sense surrounding the text of having gone beyond tradition in its ferocity, and of being responsible for the peculiar viciousness of German anti- Semitism.
