Don't spread the panic about California. Most of the problem is in NoCal where not that much air-conditioning is needed. Down here in SoCal we haven't had much problem (yet) and people have shown a willingness to preserve. In fact it's also being enforced (lower rates being offered for cutting back use and if you don't, big fines).

I for one never use air-conditioning. Consider it a waste of energy. Though I know it's tough in more humid climates.
I also shut off all un-necessary lights and appliances and unplug the fridge when I leave town. You should all do it. everyone should. Also car-pool and drive less if you can.
