Mike, in the same breath that Armstrong announced the split of AT&T into 4 separate companies he also announced a few days ago that he would like to be the head of the Broadband company.

Dan Somers was flattered that Armstrong would want his job stating that as far as he's concerned "I've got a great job heading up Broadband. I can understand why lots of people would want to do it" said Somers. It also reinforces that Michael Armstrong still believes in the vision of the cable broadband local loop. I don't believe he ever lost faith in the broadband local loop he spent over $100 billion to acquire. The basic strategy is sound in his mind and I agree with his world view of local access through the HFC plant. It's just that the market ran out of patience and did not give him the time to see it through to fruition. They demanded instant gratification for the investment.

Well, you can't upgrade, install, test, provision and service 24 million subscribers overnight. No matter how badly your shareholders might want you to be able to. So he caved to the prurient interests that wanted return on investment NOW. Armstrong want the reigns at Broadband so he can finish what he started.

I don't blame him.
