Infineon Technologies and Aware, Inc. Introduce Industry's First ADSL Chipset With Dr. DSL -R- Loop Diagnostics
BUSINESS WIRE - March 20, 2001 08:10
MUNICH, Germany and BEDFORD, Mass., Mar 20, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX), one of the world's leading providers of Communications Integrated Circuits, and Aware, Inc. (NASDAQ: AWRE), a worldwide leader and innovator of DSL technology, today announced that Infineon has licensed Aware's Dr. DSL diagnostics software for inclusion in its IVAX integrated voice and ADSL chipset. The IVAX is capable of pre-qualification and monitoring of DSL services to facilitate the mass provisioning of ADSL.

By using DSL Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs) and Digital Loop Carriers (DLCs) enabled with Dr. DSL diagnostics, service providers can perform physical and digital tests directly from their DSL equipment, including:

--single-ended loop pre-qualification to determine what services can be supported prior to provisioning;

--two-ended noise analysis to identify the source and impact of DSL disturbers such as traditional HDSL-based data services or home networks; and

--ongoing monitoring to provide real-time line statistics necessary to proactively troubleshoot changes in the local telephone infrastructure.

"The two major barriers to accelerating residential broadband deployment are the ability to determine whether a telephone line can support a particular level of service and, if not, whether it can be cost-effectively conditioned," said Christian Wolff, vice president of Infineon's Communications group and general manager of Infineon's Carrier Access Business Unit. "The IVAX equipped with Dr. DSL will enable service providers to automatically pre-qualify lines while managing their infrastructure to support bandwidth-dependent services."

Aware's Dr. DSL software resides on the Infineon IVAX integrated voice and ADSL chipset and communicates with any standard compliant ADSL modem at the customer's home. By using advanced interpretation algorithms, Dr. DSL collects physical and digital loop characteristics such as actual data rates, loop length, bridged taps, crosstalk, and in-home disturbers. Dr. DSL also calculates the data rate loss attributable to each disturber. Dr. DSL provides plain English results that are useful to technicians of varying skill levels and can be integrated into a service provider's network monitoring and customer support systems.

"Infineon, an industry leader who is clearly committed to its customers, understands that improved diagnostics translate into shorter wait times for DSL installation, less time on the phone troubleshooting performance problems, and an overall improvement in a customer's DSL experience," said Michael Tzannes, president and CEO of Aware. "The Dr. DSL-enabled IVAX chipset represents a critical piece of a comprehensive diagnostics solution for DSL."
