Oil and gas field tubulars:

"verticle" pipe is needed for well completions. Also, "horizontal" pipe is needed to tie in production to oil batteries or gas plants and to move gas from gas plants to utilities. A steel company that has a north american tubular division is IPSCO (IPS on the TSE and the NYSE).

The 4 year chart is interesting too. The steel industry is at the bottom of the cycle. Also, IPS made the high pressure pipeline for the Alliance gas pipeline for Ft. Chicago and the stock went to over CDN$40.00 when that line was approved. IPS will make a big chunk of the Alaska gas pipeline if President Bush pushes the pipeline through. Also, IPS has just expanded steel production from about 2 million to 3.5 million tonnes/year so there is a growth story here as well. If the Alaska gas pipeline goes ahead, I wouldn't be surprised if IPS goes through its old highs.
