Greg,

The more you "support" your back, the weaker it becomes. Using the ball increases the strength in the small stabilizer muscles in the spine, eventually you won't need "support" for you back. Your muscles will do that for you. But yes, I would start slow and gradually increase your "sitting" time. Paul has some excellent articles posted on his site dealing with posture and body mechanics.
