Bush might have loved Powell on the ticket as the Veep prior to the election but I would be shocked to see Powell move up now.

FWIW, I don't think a military background means beans re fitness for employment at state. Some individuals would be great, some would be duds.

I think there is a strong core of senior foreign service people who look down on career soldiers.

Re your response to my question about Jews at the CIA. My view remains that CIA is very NON-Jewish. Your remarks on Jews in the Clinton administration, however, understate the case, IMO. If there's a ring of authenticity to calling Clinton "the first black president" - an even stronger case could be made for calling him "the first Jewish president".
