You just hit on the primary reason electric cars are a long ways off in the future. Imagine 2 million people plugging in their electric cars at 8:05 AM. Now imagine what those 2 million (essential) short circuits do to the transmission system and expensive generators. Imagine transmission lines literally melting and power plants tripping off the network en-masse.

They are at least a decade away, and more likely two decades away, from being able to handle more than a token load of electric cars in California, or anywhere else. Would need to double the transmission line capacity, generator capacity, NG transmission capacity, NG production capacity, and we would almost be forced to go back to nuclear power.

Because of issues like this pure electrics will probably never happen. All other options will require some form of fuel, whether it be methane, gasoline, LNG, or some other fuel.
