JMD, I believe satellite packet data services are simply the adaptation of existing technologies to the Globalstar satellites, using CDMA as the basic communication system. This really isn't new technology, as QUALCOMM has demonstrated data access via Globalstar last year. The licensing agreement appears to confirm the fact that QUALCOMM intends to produce equipment that will enable use of G* for data communications where reliability from any location has the highest priority.

The joint announcement suggests that, even though the bond trustee is about to initiate legal action for non-payment of bond interest, and even though there are shareholder class actions charging G* and Bernie Schwartz with providing misleading information to shareholders on the total number of subscribers, there still may be a little life in G*. If the company were in the process of going out of business, I doubt that QUALCOMM would have any interest in developing data communication systems designed specifically for those satellites.
