Greater China boost for CA's new focus

BIEN PEREZ
Computer Associates (CA) sees momentum building in Greater China for its new focus on e-business, just two months after the company launched a US$100 million global corporate re-branding campaign.

"So far, we are doing fine in Hong Kong, the mainland and Taiwan," said Cliff Yung, CA's senior vice-president for North Asia operations. "But it is still early days and a lot of our customers - including the traditional bricks-and-mortar companies and dot-com start-ups - still need to understand what CA does in terms of e-business."

CA's rebranding and advertising campaign is based on a 30-second "Wake-up commercial" featuring special effects that include thousands of computer-generated cockerels sounding a dawn call on Wall Street.

This ambitious campaign is expected to reach more than one billion households in more than 165 countries this year. This broad market visibility is intended to emphasise CA's 24-year experience in business-automation software that now includes e-business information and infrastructure management products.

Mr Yung said there was no measurement of the re-branding's impact on sales of e-business software.

"We see a lot of momentum since the e-business trend began to take off last year. In Hong Kong alone, we recorded substantial growth of 30 per cent to 40 per cent," he said.

CA's e-business focus is expected to get increased value in Hong Kong's large community of small and medium-sized enterprises based on its existing application service provider joint venture with Pacific Century CyberWorks-HKT.

This enterprise is supposed to be the first ASP to deliver integrated e-business software on a subscription basis via broadband network access.

"We already have 26 such joint ventures in Asia, including one in China with Shanghai Telecom," Mr Yung said.
