Celera Genomics Eyes Sales
Of Genome Data in Japan

Nikkei Net Interactive

TOKYO -- Celera Genomics Corp. hopes to sell data collected from its
successful sequencing of the human genome to Japanese pharmaceutical
companies and research centers, according to Craig Venter, president of the
U.S. biotechnology firm.

Mr. Venter said that the Japanese
government should sign a purchase contract
so that universities and other research
organizations involved in
government-sponsored biotechnology
projects can use the data to develop new drugs.

Takeda Chemical Industries Ltd. concluded a licensing contract with Celera in
March of last year. Takeda aimed to use the data to develop drugs tailored to
the needs of individual patients.

Asked about his company's business strategy following the completion of the
project to sequence the human genome, Mr. Venter said Celera will
emphasize developing techniques to diagnose cancer and other diseases in
their early stages through protein research.
