Filmmaker Spike Lee to Try Hand at Magazine Column
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Film director Spike Lee, known for such films as ``Do the Right Thing'' and ``Malcolm X,'' has agreed to write a monthly column for the new magazine Gotham, the magazine's editor-in-chief said on Tuesday.
``It's going to be about sports,'' editor Joseph Steuer said in a telephone interview. ``He certainly knows more about sports than I do, so he has brought his expertise to the table.''
Lee's first column will appear in the magazine's third issue in May, and is expected to be about Babe Ruth, Steuer said. Media reports have speculated the column explores the possibility that the baseball great was black.
The columns will run about 1,000 words or less, in line with the magazine's other columns such as one currently written by real estate mogul Donald Trump.
Lee, director and writer of a host of films dating to the mid-1980s most of which explore the black experience and race relations in America, has sparked controversy with some of his films, notably ``Do the Right Thing,'' ``Summer of Sam'' and his most recent film, ``Bamboozled.''
``I'm a magazine editor with some newspaper background and of course am very attracted to controversy,'' Steuer said.
``The point of this is to shed some light on sports in whatever way he wants to do it. If it's controversial, then great. But that's gravy,'' he said. |
