If states insist on turning civil marriage into a twisted parody of what it's meant to be, maybe it's time for Christians, (Jews? Moslems?) to turn our backs on it. It's a covenant ( and ever more, a sacrament in our church ) between a man and a women before God. And that's enough; who needs the state to sanction that.

If the two aren't believers, why bother with a marriage at all? For the children? How many people lavish care and material goods on their children because it's the law? I sure don't. And there's now stigma attached to being a bastard today (nor should there be BTW ). Children of intact two parent families are a minority anyway.

What if they're bad parents? What if the two split up? What's the difference? The courts get involved now in that case. What difference does it make to the outcome that the father and mother are civilly married?

I frankly see no point in civil marriages today.
