Folk singer Dylan to perform in concert
By ANDREA ALBRIGHT The Capital-Journal cjonline.com Legendary singer and songwriter Bob Dylan will be knock-knock-knockin' on Topeka's door when he appears at the Kansas Expocentre for a single show next month.
The announcement came Monday that the 1960s icon will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. April 21. Tickets for the show will go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m.
Named one of the most important Americans of the 20th Century by Life magazine, the singer/songwriter changed popular music in the early 1960s by combining poetry and protest with folk music that was appealing to a wide audience. His early songs, in fact, helped establish Dylan as a political figure in one of the country's most tumultuous periods.
By 1965, Dylan's albums were selling not only for their message but also for their appeal. Known as a singer in his own right, Dylan may be one of the most covered songwriters on record. A wide array of artists with wide-ranging styles including Jimi Hendrix, Rod Stewart, Bob Marley and Guns 'N' Roses have recorded Dylan tunes.
Dylan's hit songs include "Blowin' in the Wind," "Like a Rolling Stone," "Lay Lady Lay," "All Along the Watchtower" and "Mr. Tambourine Man."
In 1988, Dylan joined the Traveling Wilburys, a "super group" composed of rock legends, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne. The combo recorded two popular albums before Orbison's sudden death derailed the effort.
Dylan toured steadily during the 1990s, and next month the Minnesota-born legend will return to the Midwest in stops announced so far in Denver and Topeka.
