I noticed a similar effect myself, with a different game.
I bought and played some hours of "Age of Empires 2, the Conquerors". This was cutting into my sleep schedule, so during the half awake/asleep combo I Would be having vivid images of the game, but as I lapsed into the dream state prior to waking, I would have a mish-mash of current happenings in the world, in my life, as well as any new stories I read or heard all mixed into an elaborate war simulation with a behind the scenes look at the actual villages. The behind the scenes look is where the local events were contained. The war was the game. The cause of it was various events or stories that my mind thought belonged there.
Quite interesting to see a little bit how that works.
