Ampex Data Systems DST Video Server Archive Brings Digital Video to WXXI-TV
REDWOOD CITY, Calif--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 21, 2001--The WXXI Public Broadcasting Council is integrating the Ampex Data Systems DST(R) 814 25.6TB archive system as part of the overall engineering and design of WXXI-TV's renovated broadcast facility's video server-based master control center, scheduled to open in midsummer in Rochester, N.Y.
According to Kent Hatfield, vice president for technology and operations at WXXI, the project includes design, engineering and integration of a new CCIR 601 16:9 & 4:3 format broadcast facility.
The scope of work involves total systems design and construction of the main equipment room, master control, production control, VTR and feed area, audio booth and graphics area.
"WXXI's mission requires rapid access to broadcast media in the multi-casting digital environment," Hatfield said. "The Ampex DST video archive will support our mission by providing more than 7,000 hours of library content to our audience in a cost-effective manner. This will help us serve our community better and use member dollars more effectively."
Reflecting its support of the quickly expanding role of digital video in broadcast television operations, WXXI is collaborating with Ampex Data Systems, Grass Valley Group and Avalon Consulting Group to provide the networked video server archive management solution for WXXI's broadcast facility.
"By uniting the industry leaders in video server system and archive and management software, WXXI-TV will enable optimal performance of digitized video from their DST 814 archive to the playback on-air environment 20 times faster than videotape," explained John Hennessy, director of video and broadcast marketing for Ampex Data Systems.
The fully integrated broadcast solution comprises Ampex's DST 814 25.6 TB automated cartridge library, Avalon's archive management software, and Grass Valley's MPEG-2 Profile Disk Recorder video server system for video ingest and play-to-air. The keystone of this solution is the use of Fibre Channel connectivity with the Avalon archive management system to store and retrieve broadcast media.
Ampex DST automated cartridge libraries are high-performance, reliable digital archives with unlimited expansion capabilities to accommodate a facility's growing video storage requirements. The DST library reduces the overall time required to archive and restore program elements to a network of video servers.
For the large number of broadcast and video houses currently using video servers, Ampex offers a bundled solution specifically designed for the broadcasting environment that meets all requirements for a compatible near-line archive to achieve complete automation.
