<But has anyone considered that there may be a political agenda behind all this turmoil? President Bush is proposing a tax cut. Doesn't this mess help muster support for his cause?>

In a way yes. But I think that such thinking is really taking your eye off the ball so to speak. Much in the same way the Tax Cut itself does. Simple facts are that the tax cuts aren't going to amount to much $$$$ in the pocket for 75% of the country. $20 here or $100 there per year just isn't the cure.

The interest rate decreases are most important as they add more 'pocket money' in the form of lower mortgage payments, potentially lower consumer loan payments, lower margin rates, lower car rates, better chance at profit for small businesses, etc.

The paltry tax cut doesn't excite me in any way. Its just noise. Cut the waste ingovernment spending, (laying off Greenspan with out severance or benefits or COBRA insurance coverage would be a start)and then I wiil get excited about a tax cut. Because that tax cut could then be substantial and still keep the government in a balanced (hahaha!) budget.
