$29 Million to Spruce Up City Toilets

BEIJING ($29 million) on sprucing up its notoriously odorous public toilets as the Chinese capital campaigns to host the 2008 Olympic Games (news - web sites).

The city would upgrade 747 toilets in popular tourist spots over the next two years and aimed to create 64 ``four-star'' toilets at a cost of 500,000 yuan each, the Beijing Daily said Wednesday.

The Chinese capital has promised to clean up its public toilets as part of a multi-billion dollar plan to improve the city's environment in preparation for the 2008 Games.

The International Olympic Committee (news - web sites) will choose among Beijing, Paris, Osaka, Istanbul and Toronto in a July vote in Moscow.
