Alcatel Forecasts Sales Of 10-12 Million DSL Lines In '01

Dow Jones Online News, 03/21/2001 12:03

HANOVER -(Dow Jones)- French telecommunications equipment supplier Alcatel SA (ALA) expects sales of 10-12 million digital subscriber lines in 2001, Willem Verbiest, head of Alcatel's DSL activities, said Wednesday.

Speaking at the Cebit technology conference in Hanover, Germany, Verbiest said this should allow Alcatel to retain a share of more than 50% in the global DSL market this year.

DSL allows operators to grant high-speed Internet access to their customers.

In 2000, Alcatel sold 7.6 million DSL lines and had a 52% global market share.

Some 70% of total sales in 2000 were achieved in North America, Verbiest said.

"This picture will change this year, with Europe and Asia growing substantially, and Latin America starting to pick up," he added.

Korea is currently the world leader in terms of DSL penetration, with more than 10% of Internet users connected via DSL.

This kind of penetration rate is achievable worldwide within two years, Verbiest said, adding that the DSL penetration rate in the U.S. is only 2% of the Internet market.

Meanwhile, Alcatel is expected to announce Thursday a deal with an Asian service provider. Details on this deal weren't available.
