One can bet against the dollar by trading in the currency markets. Other options besides BEARX is to buy into leveraged funds like USPIX (2X inverse NASDAQ). I'd say most of the easy money has been made shorting the market by now though as most of the tech stocks (not to mention the tulip-like scam stocks) have crashed back to reality. Like you said, the time to short was last year.
