Vital Statistics - 3/20/2001
Despite concerns about the economy, DVD title sales remain strong. According to VideoScan’s First Alert Reporting Retailers, for the week ending March 11, 2001, DVD title sales were 2,189,000, up significantly from last week’s sales of 1,855,000. Year-to-date sales are lingering just below the 20 million mark at 19,734,000, up 168 percent over 2000 sales!

According to the Consumer Electronics Association, for the week ending March 9, 2001, DVD player unit sales to dealers were 114,243, up 101.9 percent over sales during this week in 2000, although down from last week’s sales of 244,393. Month-to-date sales are 358,636, up 204.3 percent over March 2000 sales and year-to-date sales are 1,486,523, up 67.2 percent over sales thus far in 2000.

VCR sales, however, are suffering. Sales for the week were 150,173, down (43.5) percent from sales during this week in 2000. Month-to-date sales are 577,183, down (5.6) percent and year-to-date sales are 2,506,699, down (19.8) percent from sales in 2000.
