You've previously expressed grave misgivings about SOI, haven't you? Why the change of heart?

Not exactly. I have said on numerous occasions, that the performance benefit is on the order of 10%-15% over the best bulk process and not the 20%-30% claimed by others. I also said that this benefit is only realized if the SOI process implementation is not delayed relative to the bulk process. I also said that there were very real issues with the VLSI quality of the available SOI starting material. I also said
there are serious issues regarding the SOI device and circuit models. From the sound of the agreement with IBM, they will be using IBM's SOI device design. They must then have access to IBM's SOI device and circuit models as well. I believe they are probably also licensing IBM's SOI wafer fabrication technique. Can anyone confirm this?? If all of this is true, I will have much less concern over AMD's adoption of SOI. There is still the issue of delayed implementation. If they can truly produce volumes of the Hammer series in the first quarter of 2002, I think they will be OK. If it delays much beyond that, they will have serious exposure to Intel's .13um bulk process. Time will tell.
