Musicians search for meaning in high places

(CNN) -- Trading in stuffy, state-of-the-art recording studios for the grandeur of exotic locales can coax the muse out of almost any musician. Some of today's hottest performers are traversing the globe to blend current music with ancient cultures. In the process, they are getting to perform their music au natural -- without the benefit of hot lights and jumbles of equipment.

For some, the experience is life changing.

"To me the most, I guess, mind-boggling thing was really noticing how music communicates across all cultures. That's going to leave an impression on me forever, Will Turpin of Collective Soul said.

Turpin and his other band-mates traveled to Morocco to jam with the locals.

Singer, songwriter Bran McKnight agreed.

"To be able to get here and really show musicianship and show things that aren't necessarily commercial has been a great experience," he said of his time in Brazil.

For a closer look at the global travels of high-profile musicians, tune into a new international show entitled "Music in High Places." The show can be seen on DirecTV and is debuting next month on MTV.
