Beats me. The Palm website lists all the Palms as being backlit (as do the individual model specs) with the m505 being the only one with a backlit Graffiti area:

The IIIc has adjustable brightness, as does the iPAQ (a "frontlit" screen with 4 manual brightness settings plus "auto"), so I presume the m505 does as well. The Handspring Visor also has a backlit screen, I don't know if the brightness is adjustable or not.

So its not absence of backlighting on the screen that's the problem with the m505 (if there really is one). Have to wait and see with my own eyes, as well as what others say from hands on viewing. You'd think having had the IIIc screen panned so much, Palm would have fixed this the second time around, particularly for their new flagship unit.
