I definitely agree with you about the sheer quantity of candidates. I also agree that GLW and JDSU are good choices in the photonic/bandwidth space among many others like CSCO, JNPR, SCMR, AVNX and more. Too f'ing many.

All their charts, to me, look so similar and so bottomish. At least for a counter trend rally.

Not to mention other picks and shovels like SUNW and EMC.

Then there's the semis.

So, then, how to pick among them assuming your cash is not unlimited? A limited menu, like Macdonalds', can be a good thing to help one decide.

I guess comparing current fundamentals might be one way. Another I recently thought of for a longer term investment: discard those which have most of their operations in the 3rd world state of California.

As for MCD...not ripe yet IMO, but, much like the food, it's hard to keep such a stock down for long.

mad cow: did you ever see that joke/website which has two wave files? One is a normal cow mooing and the other is a cow with mad cow disease. Pretty durn funny. Unfortunately I can't find a link to post, but I have the files.
