Yes, this could be one (relatively plausible) explanation. I saw on Techannel that the 1.53 GHz Palomino used a Gigabyte GA7DX board in revision 3.0. Probably it won't work with an earlier revision. Or maybe this is just a coincidence. I'll ask AMD tomorrow at CeBIT about the infrastructure but probably they won't say anything substantial.
