elmatador and slacker- Please take my comments(which I think you are) with the correct perspective. I'm really just trying to figure out where mobile wireless is heading and bascially have no strong opinon. I'm playing the devil's advocate for sake of very interesting debate.
________

"The recent announcements by Sprint PCS and Verizon indicate that it is going to cost them around $2.5B and $5B respectively to move to a 1xrtt/HDR network. Considering the fact that PCS's capex last year was $3B (without any 3G costs)....these dont seem to be backbreaking expenditures."

slacker- Do you really think this is going to be anywhere near accurate? Plus the big thing to think about is, "spectrum pricing." Ouch. That's going to be the largest expenditure. How that may effect capex on the network infrastructure could be substantial. I'm kind of getting irritated with how much the government is trying milk out of the wireless SPs. In reality this is really a user tax but certainly not called so.
________

"but SMS has taken off in every country around the world (except the US)."

Yes and that's what concerns me. Nothing seems to work over here. I'm not savvy enough to figure it out, but I read the reviews and narrowband wireless stinks. Maybe it's because we have the alphabet soup of standards? Nonetheless, it's already got a bad reputation before narrowband data even gets out of the gate. Not only the keypad problem but it just doesn't work period. As a matter of fact, mobile phones are better than before, but still not super reliable.
________

"At least for me, the above stats make looking for a killer app for 3G almost useless. I never predicted, and still can't believe, the tremendous success that SMS has had."

Isn't this mainly kids to kids playing with their phones? In Japan this is the case. I bring this up because you wonder how much revenues can this generate? Maybe a lot. AOL's IM service sure seems to be something they hang onto like the crown jewel. Again kids mainly. So we probably don't get it because(at least for me), I'm too old.<g>
________

"Next time you come visit me I will loan you one GSM terminal and a prepaid SIM CARD."

elmatador- Do you have any real world examples of where you have used GPRS personally? Does it work reliably? And in a related note, do you actually use SMS in your line of work? How practical is it?
________

I'm bracing for the 3G hype and I want to keep my head out of the sand. Thanks to both of you for any further comments you can offer. -MikeM(From Florida)
