Ex-Spice Girl Geri Hires Bodyguard After Break-In

LONDON (Reuters) - Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell has hired a burly ex-soldier as a bodyguard after burglars ransacked her London home and stole $114,000 worth of possessions, British newspapers reported on Thursday.

Halliwell was pictured with her new bodyguard the day after it was disclosed that thieves had broken into her $1.43 million flat last weekend while she was away in Paris.

The intruders stole possessions worth $114,000, wrecked her furniture and sprayed the flat with milk and a blackcurrant drink.

The Mirror tabloid named her minder as former Special Air Service (SAS) soldier Steve Marshall.

``We obviously take security very seriously, but I am not going to comment further,'' her spokesman told the Daily Mail.

The singer, known as ``Ginger Spice'' when she was in the all-girl supergroup, has moved into a London hotel while her flat is being redecorated, the spokesman said.

Newspapers quoted unnamed friends of the star as saying that Halliwell feared the burglary might have been staged to frighten her.

Last February she reportedly beefed up security at a $3.57 million mansion she owns north of London because of fears about a stalker.

Halliwell quit the Spice Girls in 1998 and has since topped the British charts three times with solo singles.
