Rambus Rises on Speculation of Infineon Patent Suit Settlement
By John Stebbins

Los Altos, California, March 22 (Bloomberg) -- Rambus Inc. shares rose as
much as 22 percent after an analyst said recent developments in the chip
designer's patent lawsuit against Infineon Technologies AG might lead to an
out-of-court-settlement.

Rambus rose $3.19, or 18 percent, to $20.48 in mid-afternoon trading after
rising as high as $21.10. Shares of the Los Altos, California-based company
have fallen about 43 percent this year.

Transcripts of U.S. District Judge Robert E. Payne's decision to delay the trial
to April 10 from Tuesday suggest the potential for Infineon to seek an
out-of-court settlement ``has increased significantly,'' Morgan Stanley Dean
Witter analyst Mark Edelstone said in a report.

``The decision to delay the start of the jury trial (in Richmond, Virginia) could
have serious implications for Infineon's ability to successfully defend itself,''
Edelstone said in the report.

Rambus sued Germany's Infineon on Aug. 8 for allegedly infringing on four
patents that govern how memory chips and supporting semiconductors speed
data in electronic devices ranging from personal computers to automated teller
machines. Rambus derives most of its revenue from royalties and licensing
fees.

Rambus spokeswoman Kristine Wiseman declined to comment about the
report. Infineon was not immediately available for comment.

Shares of Infineon's American depositary receipts rose 75 cents to $35.50. One
ADR represents one ordinary share.
