Eric, WoW! Clearly a sensitive spot.

"Ollila said that Nokia's original timeframe remained in effect, despite the fact that some have voiced doubt that
the technology would debut in the schedule set by operators and manufacturers."

I understand that Euro operators' investment in GPRS networks is rather far along. I don't follow Ollia's utterings about when GPRS brain cooker phones will roll off the NOK assembly lines. I can only ask where was good ole Ollia with his fall 2001 mass production date when these operators decided to rush out and install GPRS networks so far ahead of the arrival of phones.

There are two possible answers:
1) The phone makers with OLLIA very silent about NOK having no GPRS phones until Fall 2001 (otherwise he's a liar) expected to have the phones ready long ago and honestly told the operators that they would be ready by now.
2) The phone makers knew there would be huge problems with the phones, but decided to lead the operators into spending mucho money ASAP on system equipment, knowing that once this money had been spent, the operators would have no choice but to accept GPRS and wait for the crappy phones. Perhaps they just wanted the revenue. Perhaps they wanted to avoid any move toward a CDMA overlay of GSM <unlikely>.

So Ollia has lied either by comission or omission about something very costly and important. And there has been set off a chain of events very costly to Euro GSM operators as they spent money for idle GPRS networks that likely will never exceed 20Kbps and spent billions for "3G" spectrum that can't be used because they ran out of cash and because Ollia and other Euro phone makers can't get their W-CDMA to market

In my opinion, Ollia is now lying about Euro progress and production dates for W-CDMA systems and phones.
