Alcatel launches two new Speed Touch SHDSL routers

Additional Support for New DSL Services

Hanover, Germany, March 22, 2001 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), the world
leader in Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and broadband solutions, today introduced the Speed
TouchTM 520s (Secure SHDSL Router) and Speed TM Touch 591s (SHDSL Private Line
Network Termination) routers. These new Speed Touch router offerings give customers the
ability to upload and download data faster than ever before through its support of the new
standard, Symmetric High Speed DSL (SHDSL).

These Speed Touch routers provide an SHDSL network interface ranging from 192kb/s to
2.304 Mb/s payload rates – designed to optimize the service bit rate based on the distance
separating the carrier central office from the customer premises. The Speed Touch 520s
comes complete with firewall protection, while the Speed Touch 591s has Private Line
Network Termination (PLNT) capability.

Willem Verbiest, president of Alcatel's DSL Activities, said: "In an effort to meet the
increasing demand for quicker upload and download times of files by consumers and small
businesses, Alcatel has introduced the Speed Touch 520s and Speed Touch 591s, with
support for SHDSL. The new routers allow customers to leverage the latest in broadband
technologies to meet their ever-growing data communications needs."

Alcatel is at the forefront of delivering DSL modems and broadband innovation to customers
worldwide. Alcatel recently secured the number one position in the DSL modem market
shipping nearly twice as many units as its nearest competitor in the fourth quarter 2000,
according to a newly released report by Dell'Oro Group, a leading industry research firm.

About SHDSL
SHDSL, an industry-standard ratified by the International Telecommunications Union in
February, is capable of delivering symmetric service up to 2.3 Mbps when uploading and
downloading data over a single-pair copper telephone line, or up to 4.6 Mbps on a dual-pair.
The technology allows the use of repeaters, enabling service providers to reach
subscribers up to 24,000 feet (7800 m) from the service node. SHDSL can also be
intermixed with ADSL lines without affecting performance.

About Alcatel DSL
Alcatel is the world's leading supplier of DSL solutions, helping service providers
everywhere deploy an expanded range of revenue producing offerings and applications
such as high speed Internet access, voice over DSL, and video services. Alcatel's DSL
technology is also offered in an advanced range of customer premises equipment, the
Alcatel Speed TouchTM family of DSL modems, routers, and voice and data gateways
supporting multi-line voice and data service over a single telephone access line.

About Alcatel
Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end voice and data
networking solutions to established and new carriers, as well as enterprises and
consumers worldwide. With 130,000 employees and sales of EURO 31 billion in 2000,
